Travel requirements and visas

eVisitor (subclass 651)

The eVisitor visa (subclass 651) is a visa for certain passport holders who want to visit Australia for tourism or business purposes for a short length. It allows you to stay in Australia for up to 3 months at a time within a 12-month period. The application process is done entirely online and normally take less than 1 day of processing time. There are no paper forms to fill out or physical documents to submit.

The visa eVisitor  allows you to visit Australia for tourism or business purposes. You can apply for this visa online, if you have a passport from one of the eligible countries.

With this visa, you can:

  • Stay in Australia for up to 3 months at a time, as often as you want within a 12-month period
  • Visit your family or friends, enjoy a holiday or cruise, or attend a cultural event
  • Conduct business activities such as making enquiries, negotiating contracts, attending conferences or seminars
  • Study or train for up to 3 months in total

You cannot:

  • Work or provide services to an Australian business or organisation
  • Sell goods or services directly to the public
  • Extend your stay beyond 3 months on each visit

 

To be eligible for this visa, you must:

  • Have a passport from one of these countries:
    • Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Republic of San Marino, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain Sweden Switzerland United Kingdom – British Citizen Vatican City
  • Meet the health and character requirements
  • Have enough money to support yourself and your family during your stay
  • Be a genuine visitor who intends to leave Australia at the end of your stay
  • Not have any outstanding debts to the Australian government

Visitor visa: Tourist stream (Subclass 600)

The visitor visa Tourist Stream (subclass 600) is a travel permit that allows you to visit Australia for tourism purposes. You can apply for this visa online or on paper, depending on your passport and location.

With this visa, you can:

  • Stay in Australia for up to 12 months as a tourist, to go on a cruise or to see family and friends
  • Study or train for up to 3 months in total
  • Engage in some business visitor activities such as attending meetings, conferences or seminars

You cannot:

  • Work or provide services to an Australian business or organisation
  • Sell goods or services directly to the public
  • Extend your stay beyond 12 months

To be eligible for this visa, you must:

  • Have a valid passport
  • Meet the health and character requirements
  • Have enough money to support yourself and your family during your stay
  • Be a genuine visitor who intends to leave Australia at the end of your stay
  • Have health insurance that covers you for your stay in Australia
  • Pay the visa application charge

Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) (Subclass 601)

If you are a citizen of one of the eligible countries, you may be able to apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) visa subclass 601. This is a convenient and easy way to obtain an online travel authority that allows you to enter and stay in Australia for up to 12 months. 

With this visa, you can:

  • You can use it for holiday, cruise, visiting family or friends, and some business activities such as attending conferences, meetings or seminars.
  • Study or train for up to 3 months in total 
 

You cannot:

  • You must not work in Australia. You can only do business activities that are related to your employment or business outside Australia.
  • You must not study or train for more than three months in Australia.
  • You must not engage in any criminal or disruptive activities in Australia.
  • You must leave Australia before your ETA expires or your passport expires, whichever comes first.

To be eligible for this visa, you must:

  • Have a passport from one of these countries:
    • Brunei, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, United States. If you are not from one of these countries, you may need to apply for a different type of Australian visa.
  • You must be outside Australia when you apply and when the ETA is granted.

  •  You must have good health and character. You may be asked to provide medical or police certificates if required.

  • You must not have any outstanding debts to the Australian government or have arranged to repay them.

  • You must agree to abide by the conditions of your ETA.
